This is my response:

Mr. Richards - I did due diligence with the story according to all codes of journalistic ethics and reported everything that was supported by the customary number of sources, documents and affidavits necessary. I requested an interview with Mr. Wright in your presence. He declined, and you declined on his behalf.

Then, Mr. Wright went ahead and did an interview with NBC-Dateline. If Mr. Wright would like to participate in an interview speaking directly to the content of the existing story and reporting that I have done since, I will gladly arrange a time for such an interview. I am requesting the interview only to continue reporting the story with additional information I have received.

Let me know.

Mark Ebner

My favorite part is the typo in the first claim. You instead of your is an easy mistake, but this kid has been an attorney for 12 years. Pathetic.

What about the fact that, in the first point of the letter, it jumps from first to third person. It seems at least part of this letter was written by Wright himself. It's hard to take a letter from a lawyer seriously when there are so many grammatical errors. In just the last paragraph alone he uses the word "here" instead of "hear", and "effected" instead of "affected." I wouldn't be too worried about a lawyer who struggles so much with something as simple as homonyms, let alone a libel case.

I have never seen such a poorly written letter in my life. Is the guy a real lawyer? My favorite "...statements that you do no have..."
Maybe a caveman lawyer?

*please note, I have little experience with legal documents outside of Mock Trial a few years ago, however, I have seen quite a few online, particularly those that Tucker Max has posted recently. Now, on to my God-given internet priveledges to rant, rave, and wax intellectual.

Did anyone else notice the inappropriate use of "went?" It should be "you have gone overboard." With no intent to slander, libel, insult or offend Mr. Richards and his client; couldn't Richards spend five minutes having a paralegal proofread and revise this document? Also, this was delivered by EMAIL??? What is to verify this is a legitimate legal action? Would it be so hard for someone to get a copy of Mr. Richards' letterhead and make a simple hoax? What would happen if our dear Mike Ebner accidentally deleted it without reading it? What gaurantees the document would even arrive? Couriers exist, even in this day and age. Spend a few of your client's bucks to do things correctly. Also, what is with the dramaticism within the piece? "It truly saddens me..." and "I hope you realise that you have made some really outrageous claims"... Damn, Mr. Richards, are you trying to make Mr. Ebner feel bad? Do you want him to say he's sorry before going to his room without dessert? The entire document seems amiss. Many of the things that I see within this document make me suspect that, assuming it is real, perhaps Mr. Richards simply expects you to say "oh my gosh I did bad! Sorry Sorry Mr. Richards and Mr. Wright, you are both wonderful people and I was so wrong to ever post on my blog those bad bad things I said. I will take them off immediately and please don't sue me!!!" To, essentially, roll over and die. Take them to the mattresses, Mr. Ebner!

"You have went overboard"...this guy who wrote the letter is a professional? 1st grade english anyone?

Posted by: Keenan at May 1, 2006 08:58 AM

Hey TheDame, his name is Mark Ebner, not Mike.

Bwahahahaha.

Some of the best "Look dude...I'm a...er...a lawyer! that's it...a lawyer! Now what are you going to do?" writing I've seen in a long time.

"If my office does not HERE from you"

Posted by: Larry J at May 1, 2006 01:50 PM

The spell check and the lateness of the hour obviously caused the typos. What is missing is any refutation or comments that the contentions raised by Mr. Wright are inaccurate. Furthermore, those annonymous postings are pathetic. Put your name on things instead of hiding behind the curtain. I apologize to the English majors of the world, I am more interested in getting the letter typed quickly over the internet which I did not think would be published on line. I sent it as an attachment to Mark for his review. Had I known it was going to be prominently displayed, I would have had it proofread in the AM.

he should just sue and get it over with if hes so innocent. this character has some cajones.

Posted by: bicycle bob [TypeKey Profile Page] at May 2, 2006 06:52 AM

Yeah annonymous posts are for pussies. You should all put your names out there so the litagation happy lawyer whos suing Ebner for libel knows who you are. Sounds like a great idea.

Ronald Richards is a boob. And no, I don't have police records to back that up. Just an opinion.

I have a friend who's a defense atty. She says she gets official letters from other involved parties atty's and such, and sometimes they're just AWFUL. The grammar's usually reprehensable. I guess it's like engineers and spelling.

Jeez, do you have a stain on your dress Ronald?

Posted by: Rubin at May 3, 2006 04:11 PM

Ronald,

Wow. Congratulations on the slick website. The photograph with Senator Dole and President Clinton indicates that you must be a execellent at paying 1k to some charity and getting a cute photo-op. Unfortunately, your misuse of basic sentence structure and inability to adequately express yourself reveal that you clearly are all talk. I would honestly encourage you to consult a basic writing guide. Strunk and White would be particularly helpful in your case. Your website makes no mention of where you went to law school, yet I imagine they did not have a legal writing requirement. Good luck with the strike suit business and be sure to memorize Rule 11.

Pretty sure I know the correct spelling of the word 'hear' as opposed to 'here' any time of the day. Someone must have had a busy night ;)
